26 December, 2013 (User Awareness Program on Shodhganga)

 

A one-day User Awareness Program on Shodhganga-a Reservoir of Electronic Theses and Dissertations in India was organized by Allama Iqbal Library, University of Kashmir in collaboration with the INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar in the International Resource Centre of the Library on 26th December, 2013. University Librarian, Dr. Abdul Majid Baba, inaugurated the program.
The program was aimed at providing a bird’s eye view of Shodhganga to Library staff for accessing and uploading the digitized version of Ph.D theses and dissertations on Shodhganga. This will help check duplication of research works and will also serve as a powerful anti-plagiarism tool.
The University Librarian, Dr. Abdul Majid Baba while inaugurating the awareness program emphasized the need of digitization of this valuable resource and make it available worldwide.
It was followed by the comprehensive power point presentation of Shodhganga by Mr. Manoj Kumar K. (Scientist-D), INFLIBNET Centre.
A number of faculty members from the Deptt. of Library & Information Science and Library staff  of Allama Iqbal Library attended the training program.

11 November, 2013(SciFinder for Academic Research)

Allama Iqbal Library organized a demonstration on SciFinder for Academic Research- the

world’s largest and most reliable collection of chemistry and related science information on 11th November, 2013 from 01:30PM to 03:30P.M at International Resource Cell (IRC), Allama Iqbal Library.  Expert from SciFinder gave a detailed overview of the database covering Substance searching, Locate reactions, Searching by research topics, organization etc. The demonstration was attended by a good number of Faculty members, Research Scholars and Students.

 (Book Release Function & Seminar)

 

Three books authored by prominent writers of Kashmir were released at the Ibn Khaldun Auditorium, Allama Iqbal Library on November 7, 2013. 
The books include:

Kashmir: Stray Thoughts by columnist Dr. Javid Iqbal

Kashmir Changing Shades by columnist Z.G. Muhammad and

Social Marketing and Conflict Resolution by  Mehboob Makdoomi.

The event was organized by GK Foundation, Kashmir Centre for Social and Development Studies (KCSDS) in collaboration with the Allama Iqbal Library, University of Kashmir. 

The book by Z G Muhammad was released by former head of the English department of KU, Prof G R Malik, while as the book by Javaid Iqbal was released by renowned physician, Dr G Q Allaqaband, and Makhdoomi’s book was released by KU’s Dean Management Studies, Prof Shabir Ahmed. 
The book by Makhdoomi was reviewed by Prof Shabir, while as Kashmir Changing Shades was reviewed by practicing Chartered Accountant, Abdul Majeed Zargar, and the one by Javaid Iqbal was reviewed by noted Paediatrician, Dr Altaf Hussain. 

During the book release ceremony, a seminar on ‘Literature and Newspaper writings as source material for History with special reference to Kashmir was also held.
Mr.  ZG Muhammad, Dr Abdul Ahad, Prof. MA Wani, Mr. Ajaz-ul- Haq, Prof Noor Ahmed Baba, Prof Hamida Nayeem shed important light on the above topic while the session was chaired by columnist and former Head of KU’s English department, Prof GR Malik

 

7 September, 2013 (One Day Seminar on Publishing & Piracy)

Allama Iqbal Library in collaboration with the Federation of Publishers’ & Booksellers’ Associations in India (FPBAI) organised “One Day Seminar on Publishing & Piracy” on 7th September, 2013 at Ibn Khaldun Auditorium. Eminent and learned experts from leading publishing houses in India delivered lectures on Editorial aspects, Production, Marketing, e-Publishing, Piracy and Job Opportunities in Publishing Industry. Each lecture/ presentation was followed by Question/ Answer Session. More than 150 participants including faculty members, scholars, students and persons involved with publishing industry attended the seminar. The seminar was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Talat Ahmad. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Talat Ahmad while inaugurating the seminar said that at a time when the menace of plagiarism has engulfed the educational institutions, “We should take pledge to make campus free from any plagiarized research work”. Besides, Vice Chancellor said that “there are certain trends in current world of publishing and producing research works, so if some of the technical things are taken into consideration, I think most of the problems could be solved there and then.”

The other dignitaries who spoke on the occasion included Prof. A.M Shan, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Kashmir, Prof. Zafar Ahmad Reshi, Registrar, University of Kashmir, Dr. Abdul Majid Baba, University Librarian, University of Kashmir and Mr. S.C Sethi, President of the FPBAI. President, FPBAI, S.C. Sethi in his speech said that India has reached on third rank in the world of English book publishing, so there was a lot of scope for the youngsters to start this business. During the seminar a book titled “Anwar-e-Seerat-e-Rasool (SAW)” by Mr. Majid Majeed, Library Professional from Allama Iqbal Library” was released by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir.

19- 24 August, 2013 (Training Course in Book Publishing)

In order to bring in synergy between the academia and the publishing houses to give impetus to book publishing and book reading National Book Trust (NBT), India in collaboration with Allama Iqbal Library organized a “Week long Training Course in Book Publishing” during 19- 24 August, 2013 at Allama Iqbal library, University of Kashmir. National Book Trust (NBT), India is an apex body of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and is actively engaged in developing books and inculcating reading habits in the country. To achieve its objectives, the Trust organizes various book fairs and exhibitions in all parts of the country, besides organizing the prestigious New Delhi World Book Fair at Pragmati Maidan, New Delhi annually. The Trust also engages itself in other book promotional activities like organizing book related seminars, workshops and other activities which help in developing reading habits.

While inaugurating a “Week long Training Course in Book Publishing” Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir Prof. Talat Ahmad said the training course will provide an opportunity to the Library Professionals and authors to come in contact with the key players in the publishing world across India which will help them in understanding the dynamics involved in the overall process of printing and publishing of books.

Speaking on the occasion Registrar, University of Kashmir Prof. Zafar A. Reshi said that there has to be a huge quality control in publishing of books and those published in scientific disciplines need factual accuracy so as to avoid any confusion.

Eminent and learned professionals from leading publishing houses in India provided insight into various aspects of book publishing by way of their extensive lectures and demonstrations. Indeed, the course provided a unique opportunity for young participants to become a publishing professional in current booming and expanding publishing industry.


17 August 2013 (LIBRARIANS’ DAY)

Allama Iqbal Library, University of Kashmir celebrated “LIBRARIANS’ DAY” on 17th August, 2013 in remembrance of 121st Birth Anniversary of Padmashri Professor (Dr.) S. R. Ranganathan (1892-1972) popularly known as the “Father of Library Science in India” and “World Librarian”, who had spearheaded Library development in India and abroad. The function was attended by the Librarians/ Library Professionals/ Research Scholars & Students of Library & Information science of Kashmir Valley.

Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir Prof Talat Ahmad was the Chief Guest on the occasion.Terming Libraries as gateways to knowledge in current knowledge based society ,Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad said, “Libraries play a fundamental role in society by providing resources and services and creating opportunities for learning, support literacy and education.”  Prof. Talat Ahmad also said that “Libraries help shape the new ideas and perspectives that are central to a creative and innovative society.”

18-22 June 2013(IRTPLA )
    Allama Iqbal Library in collaboration with the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, an autonomous Inter-University Centre (IUC) of University Grants Commission (UGC), conducted 5-Day INFLIBNET Regional Training Programme in Library Automation (IRTPLA) during 18–22 June, 2013. This programme imparted hands-on training in library computerisation focusing on the Software for University Libraries (SOUL 2.0) designed and developed by the INFLIBNET centre, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Library professionals including Librarians with working knowledge in computers from Universities, Colleges and other Institutes of Kashmir division participated in this programme.

                         

23 April 2013 (World Book & Copyright Day)
World Book and Copyright Day is a yearly event celebrated in most parts of the world on 23rd April, organized by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. This Day was first celebrated in 1995 by UNESCO.

 

     Keeping its commitment with the books and book lovers this year too Allama Iqbal Library 
 celebrated the World Book & Copyright Day on April 23, 2013 at Ibn Khaldun Auditorium. The event was organized with the aim to pay a universal mark of respect to books and authors and to persuade people to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.

  •      Special Lectures on “Copyright Act of India by Prof. Farooq Ahmad Mir (Dean Faculty of Law), Print v/s Electronic Media by Mr. Ajaz ul Haq (Producer, EMMRC) & Survival of Print Media in Present Age of Information and Communication Technology by Mr. Faruq Masudi (Co-ordinator, MERC);
  •     Certificate/ Prize Distribution to first Three Frequent Users of Allama Iqbal Library for the Academic Session 2012-13 &
  •     2-Day Exhibition-cum- Poster Presentation.  Different collection available in Allama Iqbal Library dealing with various subject disciplines of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh was exhibited in the Allama Iqbal Library Meeting Hall. The exhibition-cum-poster presentation continued till 24thApril, 2013.
